Frequently Asked Questions

Shipping:

When will I receive my order?
remove
add
We ship all orders on Mondays and Tuesdays. Once shipped, orders typically arrive within 1-2 days. If your order is placed after our weekly cutoff time (Tuesday at 6:00 AM), it will ship the following Monday or Tuesday. If it is placed any time on Monday, it will ship the following day (Tuesday).
My order is delayed, will it still be safe for consumption?

add

Each box is carefully packed with dry ice, to stay frozen for at least 48 hours in transit, even in the hottest months. If the dry ice has fully sublimated (disappeared) but the food is still cold to the touch, even if it is partially thawed, it’s completely safe to eat. Just refreeze or continue thawing for serving!

Please contact us within 5 days of delivery so we can make it right for you (and your pup!). We’re happy to help with replacements, reshipments, or refunds when notified within that timeframe. Unfortunately, we’re unable to process replacements, reshipments, or refunds for issues reported after 5 days.

Why can’t I order 1lb tubs to be delivered to my home?
remove
add

At this time, our 1lb tubs are not available for shipping because their packaging is not designed to withstand transit. We want to make sure every order reaches you safely and securely, so these items are currently available for local purchase only.

Why is your food more expensive online than in stores?
remove
add

The price differences mainly come from what’s involved in shipping individual orders. For online orders, we factor in extra packing supplies like dry ice and insulated shipping boxes, and hands-on labor to pack and ship each order safely. Retail orders are shipped in large bulk quantities, which eliminates those added costs.

How to feed:

How much should I feed my dog?
remove
add

We generally recommend feeding 1 cube per day for each 10lb of dog weight. For more active dogs, add 1-2 cubes to this amount. Pregnant, nursing and puppy dogs need 2-3x as much. Please check out our feeding calculator.

How many cubes come in a bag?
remove
add

Approximately 13-15 cubes.

How many calories per cube?
remove
add
Approximately 150 calories.
How many ounces per cube?
remove
add

Approximately 4oz.

How do I store the food?
remove
add

Store frozen until you are ready to thaw. Thaw in the refrigerator, then use within 5 days of defrosting.

Ingredients & nutrition:

Why aren’t all of the produce ingredients organic?
remove
add
While we prioritize purchasing organic ingredients, there are a few that can be difficult to source. When available, we always choose organic, but we can't guarantee that every ingredient will be organic, which is why a couple of them are not listed as such.
What is the general ingredient breakdown?
remove
add

Our recipes contain between 17-30% vegetables, and about 18% quinoa or rice (except for turkey and fish, which use sweet potatoes instead). The remainder of the recipes include 50-70% meat.

Do you use synthetic supplements?
remove
add
We source nearly all of our nutrients from whole food ingredients. Only 4 to 6 nutrients per recipe come from a supplement powder—far fewer than the 13 to 17 typically used by other fresh food brands. We use these 4 to 6 supplement ingredients because it is difficult to find whole food sources for those nutrients that will meet AAFCO-recommended levels.
How do you ensure nutritional accuracy?
remove
add

We work with a board certified PhD veterinary nutritionist who reviews and helps to formulate our recipes. This helps us to ensure that all of our standard recipes are complete and balanced for all life stages.

Why do you use sunflower oil?
remove
add

We include sunflower oil in a couple of our recipes because the meats in them are from ruminant animals. Meats from ruminant animals do not contain enough linoleic acid (an essential micronutrient that dogs need to thrive) to meet the AAFCO nutritional requirements. We add a tiny bit of sunflower oil (a fraction of a percent of the total formula) to provide dogs with enough linoleic acid in these recipes.

Why are some recipes (like turkey) more watery than others?
remove
add
We cook our food in a steam-powered kettle, which naturally releases some moisture from the ingredients during cooking. In our grain-free recipes, there’s nothing to absorb this extra moisture, so you’ll see it in the finished product. In our grain-inclusive recipes, like Beef & Quinoa, the grains help soak up that moisture, so the food looks drier—but the moisture is still there, held inside the grains.

Sourcing & safety:

Where do you source your ingredients from?
remove
add
The majority of our ingredients are sourced either locally from California or within the continental USA, which includes all of our meats and produce. A couple of notable exceptions: we source our cod liver oil from Iceland, and organic kelp powder from Canada.
What is human grade?
remove
add

Human grade means every ingredient and the final product are legally edible for humans and made in a human food–approved facility (USDA/FDA standards). This designation is a step above most pet foods.

What is your cooking process?
remove
add
We wash the vegetables, grind the meats, then cook everything to 165F. Then we freeze it, run it through a metal detector and package for sale.
How do you prevent cross-contamination of the meat ingredients?
remove
add

We make one recipe at a time and all of our equipment, surfaces, and floors are disinfected afterward. All of our production staff are food handler certified, helping to ensure strict food safety and sanitation practices.

Is your venison safe?
remove
add

Our venison is processed in a field kitchen with a Texas department of agriculture inspector present, who tests the meat and clears it for human consumption. This meat is then sold primarily to restaurants throughout the US. People at restaurants rarely cook the meat all the way through because so many people eat their steak medium rare, so the inspector is very strict about not allowing contaminated product to leave the field processing kitchen.

How do you prevent avian flu and other pathogens in your food?
remove
add
Avian flu can be a concern for raw foods, but doesn't affect cooked foods. Our food is cooked to an internal temperature of 165F and held at that temperature for a minimum of 5 minutes. This is the FDA-recommended protocol for eliminating pathogens, including avian flu. The food is in a different area of our facility once it is cooked, so there's no cross-contamination between the raw and finished product.

Our packaging:

Why do you use compostable bags in stores, but ship in plastic bags?
remove
add
For online orders, we use durable plastic bags because they’re more resilient during transit and help ensure your food arrives safely. Our compostable bags are still available at local retail stores!
Can I get my order shipped in compostable bags?
remove
add

Because of the way our system is set up, we’re not currently able to automatically flag custom packaging requests. If you’d prefer compostable bags, please email us before your order ships and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request. Please note that we can’t guarantee availability.

Why do some of your bags have stickers, while others have printed packaging?
remove
add

We use pre-printed packaging for our most popular recipes, as it is more cost effective for us to print this in bulk. For some recipes, we use stickers on a more generic bag, which is the most economical option at this time.
